Mary Shehan, DNP, RN, has been named Chief Nursing Officer at Weiss Memorial Hospital. She will lead Weiss’ shared leadership model and professional nursing practice efforts in addition to the delivery of excellent nursing care and an outstanding patient experience.
Dr. Shehan brings more than 20 years of senior leadership experience in nursing. Most recently, she worked at Swedish Covenant Hospital as Senior Vice President & Chief Nursing Executive. At Swedish, Dr. Shehan led the hospital to Magnet Designation, fostered a nursing shared governance program, established a service line leadership accountability process, and was integral in helping the hospital achieve Stroke Center and Pain Center accreditation. She also served as the Nursing Home Administrator for the hospital’s Extended Care Facility. Prior to Swedish Covenant Hospital, Dr. Shehan held clinical and leadership roles at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines and clinical and nursing teaching positions at Triton Community College and Chicago Catholic Hospitals.
Dr. Shehan holds a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Rush University, a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Loyola University and a BSN in Nursing from the University of Illinois. She is a certified Nursing Executive with the American Nurse Credentialing Center and a Fellow of the Advisory Board Company. She is a member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the Illinois Nurses’ Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Kappa Nu Chapter.
Dr. Shehan will continue in her role as an Associate Professor to the Adjunct Faculties at Rush University College of Nursing as well North Park University, College of Nursing. Additionally, she takes on a recently appointed position by the Governor of Illinois as a Commissioner for the North River Expanded Mental Health Services Program, which enables her to work directly with the Chicago community where she lives, ensuring program funding for this underserved population.
